The Corsair was primarily used as an offensive fighter and ground attack aircraft. Initial versions had poor handling on aircraft carriers so they served with the Marines off land-based airstrips. The huge propeller needed to absorb the power from the Pratt & Whitney R2800 engine which led to the inverted gull wing design for acceptable propeller clearance. The F4U-1D featured a larger frameless canopy for improved visibility but was otherwise similar to the initial production F4U-1.
