Description

Set two years after the events of Final Fantasy VII, Cloud now leads a solitary life traveling the Planet as a transporter. The office of Strife Delivery Service is located in 7th Heaven, which also functions as an orphanage for children stricken with Geostigma.

Three new enemies make an appearance in Advent Children. Kadaj, their leader, is in his teens, while Yazoo and Loz are known to be in their twenties. In them, Cloud sees shadows of FFVII's fallen hero, Sephiroth. The three are after "Mother" and refer to Cloud as their "Brother". Having obtained Jenova's head, their purpose appears to be to start another Reunion. Vincent suspects that with Jenova’s cells, they may even be able to create another Sephiroth.

A non-contagious disease known as Geostigma is spreading across the Planet, with Kadaj claiming that it is due to Jenova's cells working hard in the Lifestream. Children tend to show signs of Geostigma first, though adults are susceptible to the disease as well. Symptoms of Geostigma include mental weakness, pain and even death. Cloud is known to suffer from this disease though he hides his affected arm beneath his sleeve. He is heard coughing and clutching his arm in some parts of the trailers. Victims bandage affected regions and it was Cloud's used bandage, which Marlene found in the Church, that gave away his condition.

5 stars "Stunning."

Having seen this movie through a friend with access to the US release I can say that this movie is well worth every penny. Not only is the movie around 25 minutes longer, much of the film has been redone. Including changes to existing scenes, Explaining some things that weren't clear in the original film, without giving too much away I can say one such thing is how Denzel came to be staying with Tifa and Cloud.

Some scenes while remaining essentially the same have been altered to be more realistic, such as more visible wounds from fights, and clothes getting dirty from being thrown around.

Overall there is only about 30 minutes from the original release of the film still present, not counting the upscaled resolution, only about 5 minutes of that is completely unaltered.

Don't be put off by the idea that so much has been changed, as the film still remains completely true to its roots with no negative effect to the story, but quite a few improvements regarding the clarity of the story.

In my opinion this is a significant improvement on an already excellent film. No fan of Final Fantasy should miss it.

5 stars "A whole new experience on Blu-Ray"

Advent Children on DVD was well received, as confirmed by the many positive reviews on this very site. A visual marvel combined with spectacular action and an ace soundtrack made it a memorable experience to be replayed many times over!

Plot-wise though it left a bit to be desired, certainly lacking the epic nature of the game and not taking enough time to explain it's somewhat confusing story. Thus I always felt it was a great movie but one that could easily have been a lot better still.

I heard this was coming to Blu-Ray with some new scenes, but had no idea of the scale of the overhaul, with 26 minutes more running time, and much of the existing footage re-edited! The extra footage adds a LOT to the understanding of the plot, and also expands on character back stories, particularly the stigma-stricken boy Denzel, and the extra scenes featuring Zack are especially poignant.

Most significant action sequences have also been brushed up, in particular the final confrontation which works a whole lot better. The visuals themselves are a great advertisement for the Blu-Ray platform, on a full HD television this is truly a sight to behold! Some of the original untouched scenes don't quite have the same level of detail as the new edits, but still look great in full 1080p.

Extras-wise, the disc is a mixed bag. Trailers, a "history of FFVII”, the original "reminiscence of FFVII”, and a new "reminiscence of FFVII compilation” that features scenes from Crisis Core, Before Crisis, (the mobile-phone title), and Dirge of Cerberus. There is also a good animated short film starring Denzel, and an extended trailer for the upcoming FFXIII. However it is missing both "The Distance” making of feature which I had enjoyed, and the anime "Last Order” which appeared in the collector's edition DVD.

It is a shame many will miss this version due to the lack of a DVD release, however it is by far the best version of the film and comes very highly recommended to all blu-ray owners. It also comes in at a cheaper price tag than most new blu-ray releases, many of which have little or no additions to the DVD versions.

Hopefully Mighty Ape will procure another shipment soon, when that happens do yourself a favour and pick-up a copy before it sells out again!

5 stars "I thought I loved this movie on DVD :D"

High-def visuals and extended scenes make what was already a fantastic movie simply mindblowing. They add a fair bit to the clarity of the plot – the DVD glossed over the geostigma, only showing the seriousness of the illness with Cloud clutching his arm in a few scenes; the bluray makes it seem more like a plague, with extra scenes showing how people react to the stigma, for example.

As another reviewer mentioned, the entire movie has essentially been re-rendered for the Bluray release, adding soot from explosions, and dirt from rolling around in the fight scenes getting onto the characters clothing, along with visible wounding – particularly in the final battle, depicted on the cover – so those with a fine eye for detail can perhaps get something more out of the experience.

WARNING BLATANT FANBOYISM Even the latest Transformers movies are surpassed by the stylised fight scenes of FFVII:AC. Might just be me, but I prefer watching fight scenes without sparks and chunks of debris flying around blocking the way the combatants are attacking each other. Gigantic swords and kung fu women may have something to do with it too :)

As far as the story as a whole goes? “To those who loved this world, and knew friendly company therein, this Reunion is for you.”

5 stars ""Complete""

Advent Children in its original form is far from a great film. For the uninitiated, Advent Children was an impossible-to-follow film that relied too much on the legacy of the Final Fantasy VII anthology. Advent Children Complete goes a long way into bettering the film, an while lengthy, the new cut does something the original failed at – make sense.
