'I've been to hell and I'm back. If you're in that same place, then I understand what you're going through.'
John Kirwan was one of the most devastating wingers New Zealand, and world, rugby had ever seen. A prominent and revered figure at the dawn of the professional age of rugby, he seemed to live a charmed life.
But nobody knew, though, that behind closed doors 'JK' was living a life of torment. Afflicted with depression for many years – including those as a high-profile sportsman – Kirwan was able to survive by reaching out, seeking help from those closest to him.
All Blacks Don't Cry is John Kirwan's story of hope, of working through the pain and living a full life. It is a poignant, inspirational and helpful example for anybody battling depression.
At my worst moments, I lost all sense of hope for the future. As I began to slowly get better, I began to be able to say to myself, 'This will pass, you'll get through this. Hang on to hope.'
I didn't read this book, I purchased it for a family member who suffers
from depression, schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Their feedback
to me is as follows:
“It was amazing to read about someone so famous who openly talks about some
really dark issues. It helped me to feel more comfortable with my illness and
with discussing it. Every person who has suffers from a mental health condition
should read this book.”
I got this book as my husband is suffering from depression and I felt he needed to hear another mans view. Just awesome. Related to so much. Great book
The first 4 chapters were great – easy to read and I learnt heaps. Before I could finish the book a friend going through a bad time took it home, so I guess I'll have to buy another copy!
Anyone who has suffered from depression this book will be of great help to them when they read it. I found it helpful after reading the book to understand the torture anyone who has depression goes through and how they can be helped using the ideas from this book. A great book for anyone suffering from depression.
