S.P. Gates was born in Grimsby, but spent some time teaching in Malawi, in Eastern Africa where her Solo stories are set, before becoming a children's writer and illustrator. She has written over 50 books, has been shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal and has won the Sheffield Children's Book Award. She lives in Co Durham.
