When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder -- much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Clary knows she should call the police, but it's hard to explain a murder when the body disappears into thin air and the murderers are invisible to everyone but Clary.
Equally startled by her ability to see them, the murderers explain themselves as Shadowhunters: a secret tribe of warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. Within twenty-four hours, Clary's mother disappears and Clary herself is almost killed by a grotesque demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother- And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight- The Shadowhunters would like to know....
City of Bones is very original; I haven't read anything like it before. Taking place in New York City, the plot is so twisted and full of surprises with each flip of the page. I was immediately hooked from page one all the way to the end. I felt as though the characters were very well-developed – even the side characters. You got Jace, Alec, and Isabelle, who are Shadowhunters and are invisible to humans. Except, Clary Fray can see them. From the moment she meets them, she gets sucked into the Shadowhunting world and from then on strange things begin to occur. Clary's mother suddenly goes missing, and Clary finds herself being attacked by demons.
I most definitely recommend it for those of you, like me, who have a special love to explore the otherworldly. This book has it all! It's fast-paced, funny, and dark, filled with twists and turns around every corner, and includes Shadowhunters, werewolves, vampires, angels, fairies, and warlocks. I enjoyed every minute of reading City of Bones and I can't wait to read City of Ashes.
Totally love the way Cassie writes :) her style is creative and very witty, and it has you hanging on the edge of your seat for more!
Clary Fray's world is turned upside down when she witness' events she never even imagined to be possible. From the moment she first stumbles upon the three Shadowhunters – Jace, Isabelle, and Alec – killing a Demon, Clary is thrust head first into a world full of mystery and intrigue.
What are shadowhunters? And why can't anyone else see them? Shadowhunters are basically ‘invisible’ to humans. This leads Jace (shadowhunter) to question Clary's past. Why is she able to see them when no one else can?
As the novel unravels we see many things come together; including the truth
about Clary's past as well as her mother's (Jocelyn's). We see
Clary's character evolve as she takes on the obstacles of her ‘new life’.
The book also delves into the lives of the other three Shadow Hunters Jace,
Alec, and Isabelle too. All of the characters are extremely unique and all have
fascinating sub-plots of their own.
This story flawlessly incorporates a number of different supernatural elements
such as; shadowhunters, sorcerers, demons, werewolves, fairfolk and many more in
such a way that I have never seen before. In my opinion these books go above
and beyond the likes of the Twilight novels. And this comes from someone who
owns all the Twilight books and DVDs. I just find that ‘City of Bones’
along with the two books that follow on from it (City of Ashes and City of
Glass) are FANTASTIC. I own all three and have read them each heaps of times.
They never get old. I recommend these books to all! They are great reads for
the whole family! (my mum and little brother often borrow mine) ;)
