Description
This is a long-awaited re-issue of the 12 track anthology by the late Darcy Clay. He released his first single “Jesus I was Evil” in 1997 on Antena Records. It went to # 5 within 2 weeks.
People loved him. Darcy Clay played all the instruments, wrote, arranged and sang all the songs and recorded these tracks in his bedroom on a 4 track porta studio. The video for “Jesus I was Evil” cost $250 and a bottle of whisky.
Darcy Clay had a wicked sense of humour. His second EP ‘Songs for Beethoven’ was a live performance recorded direct from the mixing desk when Darcy supported Blur in the summer of '98. Darcy Clay only played 5 gigs. They usually fell somewhere between chaos and brilliance! He died on March 15 1998.
“Jesus I was Evil” won Darcy a most promising gong at the NZ Music Awards in 1998 and was voted in the top 100 kiwi music moments on C4's Rocked the Nation TV series.
“Clay was as close as you'd find to an overnight hit. He started dating an attractive artist, his first real girlfriend. He bought red patent leather shoes. When letters of interest arrived from American record companies, he joked to his family about how when he touched down at LAX, he wanted a limousine waiting on the tarmac.”
- Tim Hume, Sunday Star Times
