Having been around since the mid-nineties and exploding onto the scene with a
genre defining debut that was 1995s Demanufacture, Fear Factory have always been
a band slightly from left-field with their more down tempo, sing-growl approach
and quite possibly paving the way for the hoards of nu-metal outfits that
followed some five years later, and whilst not always hitting the mark with
albums that followed and losing co-songwriter and machine gun wielding guitarist
Dino Cazares for their last offering, 2004s Archetype, there was serious doubt
looming that this band would ever be able to keep a solid line-up, let alone
produce something that would rival their self titled debut.
But through a chance encounter between two old friends at a metal show brought
Cazares and vocalist Burton C Bell together and not only have the band started a
new chapter but put simply havn't produced an album with songs that are this
good before. Gargantuan riffs peel out of every pore from the off and having
recruited Strapping Young lad sticksman Gene Hoglan to the fold, it serves to
only make the band more monstrous, from opener Mechanize which pulverises
anything in it's way, Industrial Discipline follows in a similar vein whilst
songs such as piano laden Christploitation serves up something that makes the
band sound more than just a one trick pony. Album highlights such as first
single Fear Campaign and heartfelt euthanasia themed, closer Final Exit proves a
perfect finale that pulls on the heartstrings to round off a comeback that
proves what a major kick in the ass of a healer time can be.
