I am a very fond supporter of “New-Who”, but what really annoys me is how the BBC dress up all their box sets to look amazing, then shoot the prices way up! This only has 5 episodes, yet it costs almost double a season of Stargate SG1 with 22! And only because of the packaging.
Aside from that, the episodes are very good, and a worthy send off to the best Doctor Who ever! Even if Russell T Davies threw in one of his classic cliffhanger finales, (these really annoy me!) I still feel very happy about these 5 feature length episodes.
So my final verdict is,
If it was $50 definitely, but at $90! Most definitely wait for a sale!
Dr Who has passed through many iterations/regenerations in the past, and most dedicated fans love the jump from one Doctor to the next – that moment when the Doctor shifts faces.
However, the box set of series 5 excludes these 4 specials that were aired at Christmas and New Year in the UK – where the Doctor makes this shift in face for the 11th time.
When series 5 ends, the Doctor has made some rather radical decisions about his future and those who travel with him. Series 6 begins with these choices being somewhat overwritten – and why this happens is hidden in these Specials.
Each of these stories is a shining example of the acting talent that is Tennant, as he reveals yet again why he has made an excellent choice for the Dr Who series.
The Next Doctor leads us on a merry chase as we debate who the new doctor
will be.
Planet of the Dead shows him turning down a companion who whom he was/could be
great.
The Water of Mars reveals the problems of the Doctor being on his own.
The End of Time 2 episodes shows the final moments of Tennant, and how his
acting skills continue to amaze.
Any avid fan and collector of the boxed seasons has to get this box set to finish their collection – otherwise they will miss some of Tennant's final moments and the last of the great writing and producing by Russell T Davis and Julie Gardner.
Grab it now before it vanishes – as it has already become impossible to find in conventional DVD stores in New Zealand!
