Description

The Fifth Doctor and the Master do battle over a shape-shifting android in these classic 1980s adventures: The King's Demons, Planet of Fire and Planet of Fire Special Edition.

The King's Demons:
King John is visiting the castle of Sir Ranulph Fitzwilliam. The arrival of the TARDIS disturbs a medieval joust, but the Doctor and his companions are proclaimed to be friendly demons by the King, who seems strangely interested in their “blue engine.” It soon becomes clear that neither King John or his Champion, Sir Gilles Estram, are who they pretend to be. One of the Doctor’s oldest and deadliest enemies threatens the future of democracy on Earth, and he must be stopped!

Planet of Fire:
A strange signal from Earth draws the TARDIS to the island of Lanzarote, where Turlough rescues a young American girl, Peri, from drowning. Among her possessions is an artifact bearing an alien symbol - the same triangular mark that Turlough has branded into his arm. The mystery deepens when Kamelion falls under the control of a powerful mind, and the TARDIS travels to the volcanic world of Sarn. As Turlough is forced to face his past, the Doctor must stop his oldest enemy from harnessing the revitalizing powers of Numismaton gas.

Special Features:
  • Commentary with Peter Davison
  • Magna Carta: Exploring the great charter
  • Commentary with Peter Davison, Nicola Bryant, Mark Strickson and director Fiona Cumming
  • The Flames of Sarn: Documentary on the making of the story
  • Deleted Scenes, Extended Scenes & Continuity
  • An alternative version of Planet of Fire

3 stars "Only a mother could love it..."

These two stories involve Kamelion – a robot who is easily manipulated either for good or evil. The then producer, John Nathan-Turner, saw this revolutionary robot who could talk and move, and thought it would be a great replacement for the much loved companion, K9.

Wrong.

The first story, The King's Demons, is mediocre at best. I'd go so far as to say that it is the worst story I have seen from the Peter Davison era.

Planet of Fire is much better, resolving the story around one companion, Turlough, and introducing another new companion, the bikini-clad Peri, who was quite likeable in this story and the next, but suffered from poor scripts in the next two years alongside Colin Baker's Doctor.

For those who watch ‘The Simpsons’, they'll know how the problem of “Poochie” was solved, and will be aware of the joy it brought to fans. The outcome for Kamelion brought similar joy to every true fan of Doctor Who.

Perhaps worth a watch for “Planet of Fire” alone.
