Description

Set against the stifling conformity of pre–World War I English society, E.M. Forster’s Maurice is a story of coming to terms with one’s sexuality and identity in the face of disapproval and misunderstanding. Maurice Hall and Clive Durham find themselves falling in love at Cambridge. In a time when homosexuality was punishable by imprisonment, the two must keep their feelings for one another a complete secret. Sparkling direction by James Ivory, distinguished performances from the ensemble cast, and a charged score by Richard Robbins all combine to create a film of immense power. Maurice is a romantic, moving story of love and self-discovery for all audiences.

4 stars "Great picture restoration"

We have had a copy of ‘Maurice’ since the days of VHS. Neither the VHS print, or the later Dvd were of very good quality. Of most concern, was a very noisy soundtrack, particularly in the first half We were very pleased that at last, a digital restoration had been made. It was disappointing to find that, although the enhanced picture is excellent, the soundtrack noise,if anything, has been enhanced, so there is now very obvious thumps and bumps which bear no relation that we can see, to the soundtrack of the movie. It is still an improvement on previous editions, and perhaps one day, there'll be a further restoration that will give us a nice, clean soundtrack!
