Description

Red Cliff is a visionary epic based on the legendary battle in which a force of fifty thousand men defeated an army of nearly one million. In the final days of the Han Dynasty, shrewd Prime Minister Cao Cao convinces his fickle Emperor the only way to unite China is to declare war on two neighbouring kingdoms. Thus begins a brutal military campaign of unprecedented scale and the formation of an unlikely alliance. Waging several battles of strength and wit, the course of Chinese history is changed forever by the final battle at Red Cliff.

4 stars "A must if you like good films"

I saw the international version at the Wellington film festival a few years ago and enjoyed it. It's even better in the full version. Good acting, great camera and a fun way to spend a few hours.

4 stars "Not very realistic, but entertaining"

This movie is very impressive, with overall superb acting, excellent fight sequences and epic soundtrack. For those who have read the Three Kingdoms book or know about the story of the Red Cliff, this may be a dissapointment. There are so many historically impossible plot points, that people who know even a little about ancient Chinese history will probably not find this film convincing at all (which includes its themes and messages).

All that aside though, this film is of such high quality, that it's possible to just ignore the inaccuracies and just be entertained. An added bonus is that this extended version is longer than the original release, and covers many subplots not explored in the original. So if you're thinking about purchasing this film, definitely get this version.

Watched the 1st and waited 2 years before I found the sequel. Worth the wait. Great direction, fight sequence. Just great!!
