5 stars "Brilliance"

I bought this on a whim, an I am so glad I did.
Martin Freeman is the perfect Watson, tolerant, funny and befuddled. Cumberpatch (and what a name) is the most elegant, eccentric and insane Sherlock you MUST see.

5 stars "Made of genius!!!"

This was an inspired purchase. Quality program, quality production, quality acting, quality writing, and quality DVD's. I will be re-watching and dissecting these two series for months to come.

5 stars "Brilliant - a must watch series"

Love this adaptation of Sherlock Holmes. Pithy, scary, quirky, modern, brilliant actors and interpretation of the story lines. I'm so taken by it I've bought the original stories to read. It's like watching an old time detective story in a current day setting, very cleverly done and the characters and their quirks almost seem real. You must watch this series whether you are a die hard Sherlock fan or not. I never buy TV serialisations on DVD; once is usually enough, but not with this series, I know I'll find something new every time I watch it.

Description

Complete Series One
Sherlock Holmes can tell a software designer by his
tie and an airline pilot by his thumb. He has a unique
analytical brain and, unlike anyone else in the world, he staves off boredom by solving crimes. When a chance encounter brings soldier John Watson into Sherlock’s life, it’s apparent the two men couldn’t be more different, but Sherlock’s intellect, coupled with John’s pragmatism, soon forge an unbreakable alliance.

Complete Series Two
Sherlock and Watson return… Embroiled in the complex plans of the dangerous and desirable Irene Adler, Sherlock needs every one of his remarkable skills to survive and an invitation to the wilds of Dartmoor brings our terrified heroes face to face with the supernatural. Meanwhile Sherlock’s nemesis, Moriarty, is out there in the shadows and is determined to bring Sherlock down – whatever the cost.

Reviews for Season 1

“Tremendously clever fun” Entertainment Weekly

“There have been many great "Masterpiece” offerings over the decades, but I can't think of a single one that is as much out-and-out fun as Sherlock, a modern-dress Conan Doyle that crackles with superb writing, brilliant performances and snappy direction, and does it all while somehow managing to be oddly faithful to the original source material." San Francisco Chronicle

“The result is a sharp, funny, clever series that remains faithful to the spirit of Doyle's stories while infusing them with a vibrant spirit of modernity.” USA Today

“Cumberbatch and star British producers Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss ("Doctor Who”) have performed quite a remarkable feat here–they've created something unique and pleasurable where so many have trod before." Newsday

“The stories are complex and contemporary, with references to a remembered past. But it's easy to forget the past–the present Sherlock, droll yet naive, is so wonderfully weird.” Wall Street Journal

“Sherlock is the rare reinvention that's likely to enchant purists as well as those yearning for a new look at an old favorite. Should you bookmark it now on your DVR? The answer, my dear reader and viewer, is elementary.” TV Guide

“Clearly, there are few more durable figures in fiction, but capturing the fundamental appeal of Holmes is quite another matter. And on that level, Sherlock cannily cracks the case.” Variety

“It is cinematic in the sense that nothing in it looks quite real. But it works: This is not the London known as jolly and old, but the new chilly city of glass, a place of missed connections, of aliens and alienation. And the smart dialogue and warm performances–even Holmes has a discernible beating heart, or perhaps two–keep ice from forming on the production.” LA Times

“A viewer who knew nothing of the earlier incarnations could come to this one and find it immediately engaging, like a good modern police buddy-team drama.” New York Daily News

“The appeal is elementary: good, unpretentious fun, something that's in short supply around here.” The New York Times
