Description

A brilliant depiction of the passion and romance of life on the high seas, The Onedin Line remains one of the most visually exciting television drama series ever produced. Series 3 of this saga of ambitious men, tempestuous women and stormy seas contains 13 enthralling episodes.

From 1971 to 1980, millions followed the drama and spectacle of this lavishly-filmed television series set in England in the 1860s when British naval strength was the envy of Europe. The saga charts the fortunes of an ambitious, clever and determined ship owner James Onedin (Peter Gilmore), whose private life is more tempestuous than the seas he sails. Glamorous square-rigged sailing ships, meticulous historical accuracy, picturesque location filming and Khachaturian's memorable theme music all combine to make The Onedin Line an unforgettable experience.

As series 3 embarks, it is six months since the death of Anne Onedin and the newly widowed James busies himself with work. Gradually he considers a second marriage and finds himself having to choose between two women: the adoring Leonora Biddulph, daughter of a wealthy coal merchant and Caroline Maudsley, a sophisticated wealthy widow whom he rescues from a dugout canoe on the Amazon river.

Working the Onedin ships hard for every dollar, James journeys to the Baltic, East Africa, America and north-east Canada. Extensive location filming is again a feature of The Onedin Line and highlights include a spectacular storm filmed in the Baltic Sea.
