4 stars "A beautiful return to 2D"

In 2004, Disney announced that it was no longer going to be producing 2D animated films. However, after a major company restructure in 2006, the new head of animation, John Lasseter (founder of Pixar) decided that they needed to go back to 2D. “The Princess and the Frog” is the result. Visually beautiful, it follows Tiana as she aspires to open her own restaurant in New Orleans in the 1920s. Meanwhile, a young prince, Naveen, visits the city on his quest to marry a rich heiress so he can continue his party lifestyle. Their paths cross when Dr. Facilier, a voodoo priest, casts a spell on Naveen and turns him into a frog. Though overall the songs by Randy Newman don't quite live up to those written in the early ‘90’s for classics such as “The Lion King” and “Beauty and the Beast”, this is more than made up for by Dr. Facilier's song, which has quickly become a fan favourite. Also watch for “Almost There”, where the animation changes to a warm art deco style. The male and female leads are both strong and rounded characters with believable chemistry, and the supporting cast is just as memorable and entertaining. The story clips along at a nice pace, and the climax is thrilling. This is a worthwhile addition to any Disney collection. Let's hope to see more like it from the studio in the coming years.
