Gerard Smythe’s documentary When a City Falls is a collective examination of the Canterbury earthquakes, physical and emotional damage.
Smythe and his team filmed over 100 hours of footage capturing the emotion & resilience of the Christchurch community. This stunning documentary gives all New Zealanders, and those further aboard (who saw hours of devastating news coverage), the opportunity to experience the emotion of individuals and the human spirit of a community coming together in a time of high emotion. When A City Falls serves as an important historical record of one of this country’s most devastating events.

“Grippingly emotional. Heartbreaking, humbling and inspiring.” – Darren Bevan, TVNZ
I found this a must watch after having gone through the whole twelve months in Christchurch. It was good to see much of what is still out of bounds for us. Very hard not to shed a few tears now we can take the time to watch & look back.
I remember watching in horror the news back in feb 2011 and i think this dvd has been very well made. It brought tears to my eyes and i think it respected the many dead and there families. “I will always love Christchurch” i visited back in november 1997 and have many fond memories.
I lived in Christchurch all my life and have lived through all the earthquakes. this movie is an excellent glimpse into what has happened to my beloved city. when the quakes hit, a lot of us here in chch had no idea what was going on and no clue of the things that happened around the entire city especially that terrible day on Feb 22. this movie even showed me things i hadn't seen or heard about. but a bit of a warning though, it's a real tear jerker. watch with a box of tissues on hand.
When A City Falls is much more than a documentary- it is a glimpse of the courage and resiliency of spirit of the people who call Christchurch home. It also makes real a tragedy that is hard to grasp when only seen on the nightly news. See it.
This is a sad story about Christchurch, I have good memories when I was a kid what Christchurch look like. Great Service Mighty Ape!!!
