The hype of Defiance definitely outweighed the quality of the end product. I expected this game to be awesome and this is nothing short of a cheap MMOFPS. Good luck to the TV show, but this is how the game is:

The Arkfall gameplay is repetitive and the guns don't vary enough. These two things are the most important factors of the game. MMO games require variety to be fun to play, with Defiance – it isn't.

As for the events, they're nothing different from most MMO's except you have a gun rather than a spear, sword or staff. Nothing new here.

Overall, Defiance brings nothing new to the table. A lacking amount of gameplay, the multiplayer is unbalanced and there is no variety to the game – there is no eagerness to find rare items or drops etc.

Buy this if you wish to support the TV show, as the game is just a tack-job compared to it.

"Free to play so give it a look."
3 stars"

It's free to play now, and so it's worth having a look. But from what few MMOs I've played I'd have to say it's a pretty sorry effort. The only thing the game had going for it was the tv show tie-in. And that only works if you started playing when the show started. If you judge the game on it's own merits, as I have it's repetitive and quite unsatisfying.

The main thing I dislike about it is your character doesn't actually talk to, or interact with any NPCs. There are no dialogues, even in the cutscens for the main story missions where your character contributes. In those your character more or less stands in the background and watches. The side missions are handled by clicking on these weird blue orbs or light that are scattered around the landscape. I've no idea what they're supposed to be or why the devs thought that was better than talking to an actual person. The mission will come up, and you click on Accept or Decline. That's it.

I haven't played it all the way through yet but that seems to be the extent of the gameplay. There are no settlements, or just very small ones. The town of Defiance, from which the game gets it's name isn't even in it.

As the other reviewer stated there is very little loot, and very few outfits (that you don't have to pay real money for). The combat is tedious due to the sheer number of enemies you have to plow through.

But one good thing I can say is it's quite playable solo. The co-op missions are optional and handled separately from the other missions, and the game automatically teams you up with other players so there's no difficulty trying to find enough people. The two other MMOs I've played, The Old Republic and Conan were often an exercise in frustration, hanging around a dungeon entrance hoping to get invited into a group, or begging for help on global chat. But to be honest I would rather play those games.
