“The Grocery Cart by Melissa and Doug is the absolute top-of-the-line toy grocery cart. There is no comparison between this heavy-duty grocery cart and the cheap plastic versions out there. This sturdy shopping cart features metal construction, a durable plastic handle, a folding seat and pivoting front wheels. It also has an ingenious safety feature that I haven't seen in any other toy grocery cart; the shopping cart has 3 small poles underneath that touch the ground when the basket is pushed down too far. This stops the grocery cart from moving if a child (or too heavy an item) is sitting in the basket. Not only do I appreciate the solid metal construction in terms of durability, but my kids are drawn to this grocery cart because it looks just like the carts they see at the grocery store. (When teaching, I found that kids are consistently drawn to dramatic play items that look "real” instead of some of the cartoonish-looking, brightly colored items out there.) My kids love pushing a favorite doll or stuffed animal in the folding seat while they shop. In terms of learning, this grocery cart encourages kids to engage in dramatic play, which builds social skills and language skills. I know the Melissa and Doug Grocery Cart is more expensive than most of the plastic models out there, but the extra money is definitely worth it with this purchase.
