Director Sam Raimi originally started out with the horror genre in the Evil Dead films which became cult classics and made Bruce Campbell famous. Since then Raimi has recently directed the Spider-Man trilogy. They are fun and entertaining movies but unfortunately the trilogy ended with a terrible third film that was embarrassing for Raimi's career (I blame the producers). The great news is Sam Raimi has returned to his horror roots and with his brother and co-writer Ivan Raimi. Together they have created one hell of a horrific horror ride!
I am not a horror fan – these days horrors usually consist of teenage models in a cabin in the woods being tortured by either a little Asian girl or a psychopath in a mask, which is just getting old and boring and utterly predictable. Drag Me to Hell is a refreshing compliment to the horror genre, with an original story, characters who are relateable, plus the frights are genuinely shocking and scary. The best aspect of the film is the humour. I was laughing at most of the “gross out” scenes because they are so outrageous and disgustingly brilliant! This style of horror reminded me of Army of Darkness and Evil Dead II and makes for a very entertaining movie – one where you just can't wait for the next scare but which is still surrounded in mystery and twists till the very end.
Alison Lohman (Matchstick Men) plays Christine Brown. She works in a bank doing loans. Her boyfriend Clay Dalton (Justin Long) is a talented Doctor. They live in a nice house and have a cute little kitten. Christine is living a very comfortable life but that is all about to change, dramatically!
“Here kitty, kitty…”
Drag Me to Hell was hella fun. I loved every moment of it. I jumped out of my seat in fear and shock many times and grimaced and laughed my way through the rest. I love this film for getting me out of a movie slump of bad depressing movies and reminding me that there are still people like Sam Raimi in Hollywood that still care about making good fun movies.
Drag Me to Hell is the perfect movie to see on Dvd at home on a stormy night and I guarantee you will have a good time, but if you are afraid of old people and bodily fluids, flies and spooky eyes then you should still see it!
