Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere Review
(for season 1)

"Horizon On the Middle of Nowhere contains the most condensed anime world seen in a while. Early comedic fantasy high school action soon crashes into more serious plotlines about a dead child, warfare, Japanese history and outlandish powered-up battle sequences. All this in circling around lecherous class president, Aoi Tori, and his love life. Tori fell in love with Horizon Ariadust when they were children, only to watch her get run down by a horse-drawn carriage (quite the anachronism in a world where everyone lives on enormous space ships that hover over Japan, the last habitable place on Earth and now a highly contested battleground). Lucky for Tori, Horizon returns as the robot waitress in his local restaurant. Tori, destined to walk one of life’s more difficult paths, decides to declare his love for Horizon the morning before their city seems destined to be destroyed by scheming political types.

What is really exceptional about these collisions between genres and plotlines is how well-balanced they are. Not that Horizon is perfect: there is some pretty tedious plot exposition in most episodes, some dodgy pseudo-religious and sci-fi plot elements, and WAY too many characters for the 13-episode arc.

..And yet… the 2-D character designs mesh beautifully with the occasional 3-D space ship sequences, and the battle sequences are slickly paced and well-animated. In one of the more visually inventive tropes, the battle sequences feature computer screens that pop up all over the place, generated by the students’ belief in the Shinto deities that they call on for extra speed and power. The plethora of characters, despite Tori’s sketchy, lechy moments, and the over-sized breasts on most female characters (which jiggle distractingly throughout), come with well-defined back stories. Most of the main students receive some character development, and even their antagonists change over the course of the series, perhaps especially chivalrous Spanish samurai-type Muneshige Tachibana and his oddly dressed wife, Gin. Horizon is a promising start to what promises to be an epic anime fantasy series." culttvtimes.com (reviewing season 1)
