"Great Price, Great Shipping, Pity about the Game"
3 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Ordered the game because I'd been thinking about buying it for a while, and the Mighty Ape price($15 at the time) was just too good to be true. Didn't realise when I ordered it that it was the limited edition version and came with sound track, figurine and making of DVD etc. And while I didn't really need any of those things it makes the purchase even better value for money.

Product arrived fast and the cost of shipping was very reasonable. Might Ape did a great job of keeping me informed of the order status via email.

Unfortunately the game itself is not the best. The graphics are good, but not quite as good as I'd expect. More to the point though, the controls are truly awful.

The story is interesting and the game does have some atmosphere so I'd like to play through it, but to be honest the controls are so terrible that I'm not sure I'll persist with it.

Combat in the game is also pretty boring, and to truly defeat an enemy you need to drag their body into fire before they wake up from an unconscious state. Due to the terrible controls I am often unable to move the body at all, or only a few inches before the creature wakes up and I effectively have to repeat the combat. When I do manage to the move the body I often end up standing in the fire myself.

Although the game features save and load functions, they really only seem to save at ‘checkpoints’ and so failing to complete a combat or portion of the game often leads to replying other pieces over and over again, and some in game cinematics don't seem to be skippable so you end up watching them repeatedly too.

You can switch between first and third person views, and I find first person easier to control, but the game has an annoying habit of switching you to third person view for no apparent reason. Additionally some objects (fire extinguishers) have different ‘use’ actions based on which view you are in which can be very confusing at first.

In summary, buy from Might Ape. Don't buy this game unless you're a fan of the series or you are prepared for the poor controls and annoying repetitive game play.

"Lacking Support"
3 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Alone in the Dark (2008) really has the potential of reshaping the survival horror genre. You need to think fast to solve problems and despite fidgety controls, most combat leaves you feeling rather helpless which is a good representation of my chances in an actual disaster. Having to combine items in order to better fight foes is a nice touch with it all being limited to your own jacket space. Further proving that the developers really tried to tie in a sense of survival and desperation. The narrative is smooth and the DVD style layout of the missions is unquie and works well in the setting. However with the good comes the bad, the largest problem with this game is that Atari decided to not release updates or patches to fix small glitches and bugs. Secondly if you have Windows 7 64bit you are going to have vast graphical errors such as a small bug that does not allow you to change the resolution without a crash occurring. Bugs aside the Limited Edition comes with an amazing sound track and the art book has some very impressive pieces. If you weigh up the cost of the items piece for piece it is more than a worth while purchase. Just wish they would release a patch to take care of the bugs.

"Not bad but not good either"
3 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

This game is good in some ways, but sometimes it can be annoying, especially if you die because you'll most likely start from the start of the level again. The game is pretty cinematic, which makes it interesting to play sometimes, controls in third person are a bit messed up and hard to use at times, easier to use first person. If you have patience then get this game.
