Borderlands comes from good gaming stock, from the guys who developed the Half-Life expansions, helped in the development of Halo, and of course the Brothers in Arms series.
For a first attempt at an RPG hybrid, they seem to have got quite a few things right that more distinguished developers should take note of.
Procedurally generated landscapes, dungeons and weapons, essentially providing unique experiences no matter how far into the game you go, aim to create a feeling of “just one more room” which looks like it will be fairly effective.
Using four main characters instead of creating your own limits replayablity a bit, but hopefully will include optional questlines to explore, and four player co-op in an FPS RPG is one of the best ideas I've heard in a while.
Overall, looking forward to this game, if a bit hesitant that they can pull it off.
Borderlands was quite an ambitious title, fusing the two genres of Role Playing with the First Person Shooter Genre – And it worked!
First things First – if your a diehard Role playing type gamer, Borderlands will seem very simple, as there isn't as many skills etc that you can upgrade as you could in your typical RPG type game. However, what is there suits this game well and is great for a casual RPG player, or even someone who has never played a Role Playing Game before and just wanted to shoot some bad guys.
The shooting mechanics on the game are fairly good, maybe not quite as good as your Armed Assault or Call Of Duty series, but it still works well. The game has a inbuilt content creator, basically resulting in thousands – maybe even millions of possible guns to find. You will never find the same gun twice.
The Story probably lacks a little bit of depth/background, but tbh you don't need it in this title. Its a fairly open world, with you getting the objective and setting off to complete it in any way you feel necessary.
Great game, well worth the buy/.
If you enjoyed fallout 3 this game is the next best thing, the online co-op mode is by far the most fun especially if your playing on a lan with friends.
This game is an interesting mix of FPS, RPG, and comic styled animation.
It takes place on a desert planet full of bandits and weird creatures. You have to hunter for the key to a vault, said to contain riches and alien technology. Though there are many side quests you could do as you hunt for the keys to the vault.
The graphics are comic style, so they aren't they best compared to games like
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. But the game looks great as it is.
The sounds are good, and the voices suit their characters well.
The game plays nicely, the controls are easy to pick up if you've played an FPS before, and if you've played an RPG like World of Warcraft or something similar as well then there should be no problem setting up your character the way you want it.
The weapons, grenade mods, class mods, and shields are what really makes this game something worth playing, if you enjoy a game that never drops two of the same item, then you'll be over the moon with Borderlands. The guns are all rather balanced, until you get elemental weapons, in which case some are better than others, but all have a use somewhere. For example fire weapons work well on targets who's shield is down or have no shield, explosion works well on about everything, corrosive works well against armor, and shock against shields.
I have played it through once, and really enjoyed the main quest, I haven't
done many side quests though. But they aren't boring like side quests can often
be.
I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys leveling up and FPS games.
I give this game a 9/10 (4.5/5 stars)
Whether you're playing this solo or with a group of mates you'll love the action and just general feel.
It's highly addictive, so expect to put any commitments or partners on the backburner as you'll be thoroughly distracted. ;)
