MGS2 – Main character – Codename: Raiden – is dispatched to an offshore clean-up facility under the orders of rescuing hostages – including the United States President – taken by a terrorist group known as Sons Of Liberty.

MGS3 – Set in 1964, during the Cold War. ‘Naked Snake’ (Big Boss), a CIA agent is sent to Soviet territory, Tselinoyarsk. Snake's mission is to rescue defected Soviet Scientist, Dr. Nikolai Stepanovich Sokolov, who is being held captive and forced to produce a highly advanced nuclear-equipped tank known as “Shagohod” (AKA: The Treading Behemoth). The mission seems to go as planned until Snake's former mentor, The Boss, defects to the USSR and provides her new allies (Yevgeny Borisovitch Volgin [AKA: Thunderbolt] and ‘The Cobras’) with two miniature nuclear shells. Volgin then launches one of the Davy Crockett nuclear shells, passing the blame to ‘The Boss’.
