"Great Story about a Great New Zealander"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

I think that this documentary is possible the best I have ever seen. The documentary captures the very essence and character of Willie Apiata's. It also in my opinion clearly and accurately reflects the passion to which he holds for his family, his iwi and his career are evident and in some scenes quite raw. I think whom every came up with the idea for this doco should be commended. As the summary states a great story about a great New Zealander. If we could all take something away from the character of Willie we would all be enriched.

"Absolutely Brilliant"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

We watched this documentary on Saturday afternoon and I thought it was one of the best I have seen, from the build up to the end of this doco. Along with other VC Heroes Cpl Apiata was at his modest best, just doing what he was trained for, helping his mates. Being a Kiwi myself it was very moving to see him visit his wife and child and to walk on to the Marae where he was born. Wille, you are an inspiration to all mankind. One person I would love to meet. D Patchett, Gold Coast Hinterlands.

"A moving insight into the man, the humble hero; Willie Apiata"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Despite his genuine protestations regarding adrenaline taking over and being drilled in the automatic actions of a soldier, there is no doubting the courage involved in Willie's deeds of heroism. His V.C is surely deserved as is shown in this excellent DVD where war scenes are interwoven with private interviews and scenes from Willie's home coming. I have watched more than once, and highly recommend “Reluctant Hero”

Description

An exclusive documentary about New Zealand’s newest hero Corporal Willie Apiata, VC.

On Monday 2nd July 2007 Prime Minister Helen Clark announced that NZSAS Corporal Apiata was to receive the Commonwealth highest military honour, the Victoria Cross. From this moment, Willie Apiata was thrust into the media spotlight, the start of a rollercoaster ride in the public eye.

In Reluctant Hero, we journey with Willie as he copes with the pressure of being a recognisable public figure, a proud role model for Maori and the nation. We follow Willie from the moment that he learns he has been awarded the Victoria Cross, behind the scenes with his family, the NZSAS, the Victoria Cross investiture, his hometown marae and his attendance at the 90th anniversary commemorations of Passchendaele.

It is here amongst the rows of headstones, that Willie truly realises the weight of the medal he now bears and a fateful decision is made.
