"Needlessly complex, but great when you figure it out"

Purchased on Mighty Ape

I bought it last week, have clocked probably 27 hours into it, as well as a fulltime job and a girlfriend (who hates me playing games too much). So that should say something.

The battle system is VERY complex, even when compared to other JPRGs, and there are a number of factors that need to be considered and taken into account for every attack, else you'll find yourself in a very tight spot. Still, very rewarding when you figure out the best ways to deal with your enemies.

Story wise, it seems to start off very slow, only really giving you enough information at the start to know why your characters (the three on the box art) are doing what they're doing, and a semi-plausible reason for the world map to be shaped the way it is (world was ending, so the remnants of humanity built a gigantic tower which coud support life when Earth now couldn't). After 27 hours of play (admittedly a lot of just wandering/grinding/looking for the one item I needed to finish a sidequest, when they disappear if uncompleted after finishing an ingame chapter) its finally giving a reason for the characters to be involved in a storyline larger than themselves.

Characters are as plausible as the world they live in, although maybe not their abilities. I'd like to see someone shoot a target from the ground up into the air, then leap over it and shoot it some more, slamming it into the ground. Quite acrobatic, and makes the battles interesting to watch, but you don't play JRPGs for realism now, do you.

Graphically, 8/10 – the gears of the tower all move in both the major cities and the world map, characters are fluidly animated and well detailed – even the alternate costumes (which are customisable, but not a lot of point to it).

Soundtrack is rather good – two tracks available from the website to preview, all quite orchestral, never seeming to miss a beat as far as the emotions in each scene are concerned.

Apologies for length, Steve

"Original J-RPG"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Tri-Ace have released a great many RPGs over the years, and it would appear to have culminated in their best ever offering.

Resonance of Fate is the adventures of 3 people, a team of hunters, doing the typical fetch, protect, destroy quests that characterise RPGs, but the unique setting and excellent combat sets it apart.

Combat is a mixture of real time and turn based. You control one character at a time, and time doesn't advance as long as you are not moving, allowing a great amount of tactical flexibility in the way you operate. The charcaters use grenades, handguns and machine guns. Machine guns deal a high amount of damage, known as Scratch damage, which slowly heals. Scratch damage itself though is not fatal, and so another character must use a handgun or grenades to convert it into Direct damage, and kill the enemy. This approach is novel, and while the idea is simple, execution can be quite complex and involving, yet still very enjoyable.

The game is broken up into 16 chapters, each with one story mission (including one where you throw presents to children at Christmas instead of firing weapons at bad guys) and 3–5 optional sidequests that offer great rewards. There is also an arena with 50 ranks to fight through, special tough encounters on the world map, and a bonus dungeon available after starting the story mission during chapter 16, where the enemies are much tougher than any faced so far. New Game+ allows The difficulty to be ramped up again if needed, and you need to play this mode through if after all trophies/achievements. I had over 50 hours done on my first playthrough, and hadnt done the bonus dungeon…

A note on the story, it doesnt advance very quickly, offering only brief cutscenes every chapter, and a main adversary is not created till chapter 15, and even then is more of a convenience than anything. Despite this, it is one of the best games I have played
