Unlike most Japanese aircraft, the Ki-61 was equipped with self-sealing fuel tanks, armor, and heavy weapons. Although this made the craft much less maneuverable than many Zero variants it also improved the survivability of the craft and made it a significant threat to B-29 Superfortresses. With its Daimler-Benz derived Kawasaki Ha-40 engines, it was the one of the fastest aircraft anywhere at its first flight in 1941. Kit features structured surfaces, a pilot figure, rotating prop, detailed undercarriage and decals for a Japanese Air Force plane.
