Life saver (as this was the only place I could find to replace it).
If you buy the game on Steam, you still need the cable. If you want to make use of the two-player mode, you also need a 2nd cable (or another game bundle). The product itself is robust enough. It is long enough that you shouldn't put much stress on the USB end anyway.
