The battle for Stalingrad was a major turning point in WW2. This film looks at people caught up in that hellish conflict, their behaviour and emotions. Based on actual events, Stalingrad has it all – ever-present death and nastiness, love and kindness, sacrifice and triumph. While told mostly from the Russian side, a German story is woven in, giving the film perspective. One of the most awful, bloody events in history, with its human dimension expertly realised on screen.

What makes this film unique is that it is produced by Russians. It's been dubbed into English. The props, effects and battle scenes are excellent, with historically accurate uniforms and weapons. Because its made by Russians, not surprisingly its a bit propagandistic – but then most war movies are aren't they- The only thing I thought was strange was that there's a romance between a German officer and Russian woman citizen of the city. At first it seems that she's involved with the German against her will because she needs the food he brings in order to survive, but at the end it appears that she has fallen in love with him. I couldn't figure that out, or why a Russian producer would want to include that in this movie.
