Description
1/72 scale War Bird Collection No.75 plastic model kit of the WWII US Vought F4U1A Corsair fighter plane.
Following on the heels of their –1 Corsair comes this kit of the –1A. This kit features both styles of propeller, the “thin” –1 prop and “paddle blade” –1D prop, both styles of tailwheel, a centerline drop tank and a centerline bomb rack with bomb. This means all the options are included to model a –1A Corsair at any step in the “evolution” of the type as it moved away from the original –1 layout towards something very close to the –1D. All the parts from the original D release are still included, so it is possible to build a D as well if you want. Since some Ds were seen with the centerline tank as well as the wing root pylons, this would be the kit to get if you need that tank!
Decals are for three aircraft: Lt. Ira Kepford's aircraft from VF-17 “Jolly Rogers”; “122” from VMF-111 “Devil Dogs,” with a very large mission tally board on the side; and “Lulubelle” of VMF-214 “Black Sheep,” made famous in a photograph showing her as “Maj. Greg Boyington's Corsair” (in reality it was a staged photo – aircraft were not assigned to individual pilots in –214 – but it is still a historic aircraft and Maj. Boyington doubtless flew her on missions at some point).
- Kit depicts a final F4U-1A Corsair production version with all improvements or versions at different stages of the improvement process.
- Parts for 1000lb. bomb, external fuel tank, two types of propellers, and two types of tailwheel are included to provide many modelling possibilities
- Exquisite cockpit detail.

- Detailed landing gear with molded wheels.

Introduced into service in 1942, the Vought F4U-1 featured inverted gull wings and a massive 2,000hp engine spinning the largest propeller mounted on a fighter at the time. While the fighter's performance and toughness was quite impressive, deficiencies such as inadequate forward visibility, restricted all-round visibility due to the early frame-like canopy, and the tendency for the left and right wings to stall at different speeds led to various improvements being added throughout production, eventually resulting in the F4U-1A version. These improvements included a longer tailwheel leg for better forward visibility, a new canopy for better all-round visibility, and an almost unnoticeable 15cm stall strip fixed to the leading edge of the right wing to ensure both wings would stall at the same speed.
