Author Biography

Suzanne Carrington is Professor and Head of School in the Faculty of Education at Queensland University of Technology, Australia. Her last school teaching position was as Head of Special Education at a primary school in Cairns in 1991?93 and this is where she learnt the meaning of inclusion from the parents and students in her school community. After completing her doctorate, and working as an academic in undergraduate and postgraduate levels at QUT, Suzanne worked for one day per week conducting research in a very challenging school community in Brisbane. This school had a large special education unit and a multicultural school community. Following this work, Suzanne established and led the Staff College, Inclusive Education in Education Queensland (2002?04) while on secondment from QUT. In her role as Principal of the Staff College, she directed professional learning of staff in Education Queensland to support the development of a more inclusive approach to culture, policy and practice. She has a range of publications in the area of inclusive education, disability and teacher preparation and leads a number of research and consultancy programs in schools. She is passionate about working with teachers to develop more inclusive and ethical approaches to teaching and supporting children in their school communities. Jude MacArthur is Senior Lecturer in the College of Education, te Kupenga o te Matauranga, Massey University (Albany), New Zealand. Jude taught in primary schools in the 1980s before taking up a position as Lecturer in Education at the University of Otago, where she worked in teacher education and inclusive education. Her PhD research there involved an ethnographic study of teaching and learning in a special school for students who lived in an institution. In 2000, Jude moved to the Donald Beasley Institute in Dunedin and led research projects for the Ministry of Education and the New Zealand Royal Society?s Marsden Fund. These projects fostered her interest in disabled students? rights and perspectives as a foundation for change towards inclusion in education. Advocacy with NGOs, parents, students and schools to enhance the inclusion of disabled people in the community is a key aspect of Jude?s work, and she is a founding member of The Inclusive Education Action Group (IEAG) in New Zealand. In this role, she is involved in co-presenting nationwide workshops with teachers and parents aimed at developing inclusive school cultures and practices. She has published in the area of inclusive education and the school experiences and identities of children and young people with disabilities.
