Description

Infectious and volatile, Russian Gypsy music reflects a vibrant culture that has triumphed in the face of adversity. Driven by the distinctive seven-stringed guitar, this release celebrates the enduring strength of Russian Gypsy culture. The Gypsy road began in India a thousand years ago and, in the centuries since, the Roma have shaped the culture and music in the countless lands throughout their journey -- think Spanish flamenco, French Gypsy swing and the Balkan brass bands. The Roma arrived in Russia in the 17th century and have become an integral part of local culture. The compilation features outstanding performers such as Sergey Erdenko, whose virtuosic violin sounds dazzle the listener, or the fiery dancer, singer, and violinist Alexei Dulkevich. The bonus disc presents the legendary guitarist Alexander (Sasha) Kolpakov with his nephew and protege Vadim Kolpakov combined on this recording as The Kolpakov Duo.
