Fully wireless! 7.1 surround sound! Customisable presets! Simple Installation! Great build quality! Excellent customer service!
All these and more are promised with this headset and mine delivered on precisely none of them.
Let me start off by saying that if you think these will be a plug and play headset you are wrong. You must update both the transmitter and the headset with the turtle beach software first otherwise these sound awful. That's not a huge deal in this day and age really, virtually every piece of software or hardware must be updated before it will do like it says on the back of the box. Just be aware that it will take some time (possibly a lot of time) before they sound even half decent. That is of course if they ever work.
My next major gripe are the preset audio options. Not only is it a complete pain trying to select the one you want but none of them sound that great. When you pay $400 for a new headset (Turtle beach are releasing an updated version of these soon so buyer beware) you would expect them to sound absolutely amazing. Yet compared to the astro a50's (wondering why I have a pair of those- keep reading) these really don't cut the mustard. Another serious concern is the volume. They simply are not loud enough. I have to get a medical once a year for work which includes a hearing test and my hearing is marginally above average but occasionally I want to be able to crank the volume and really enjoy some loud, distortion free explosions which isn't possible with these. You can't turn these things up to 8 let alone 11. I was about to start trying to download or customise these to get the audio sounding decent but then came my next problem.
They stopped working. One day they connected fine the next they were utterly dead. The only sign of life was the battery still charged but every one of the annoyingly loud bleeps and bloops (another problem albeit minor) ceased to work. Well, defective products happen and within the box there are multiple pieces of paper asking you to contact Turtle Beach directly with any warranty problems or complaints. And there's my next problem.
Let me preface this by saying that I owned and used a pair of Turtle Beach x41s for many years and really liked them but Turtle Beaches customer service is awful. First of all, it took them over a week to get back to me after my initial complaint and then they only directed me to forum posts on their own website about how to fix it. I'd already tried these and others as I outlined in my email. The third (or more) time they sent me advice it was the same advice as the first time verbatim and we were going around in circles. They didn't seem interested in trying to diagnose my problem, it's much easier and less time consuming to point the blame at the customer and let them try everything to fix them. At this point I was virtually pleading with them just to send me a replacement or different model which is when they said they couldn't help me and I would have to sort it out with the supplier. Not that they would mention they can't do anything in regards to warranty first, better to let the customer do the footwork. This is after a month of back and forth. On a $400 headset.
By this point I had already bought a pair of a50's (which are great BTW) and just wanted my money back. The retailer gave me my money WITHIN THE HOUR.
After all that, there are some good points with these. They are extremely light but of reasonable build quality (unless of course they stop working over night), the battery is very good (better than the astro a50), the wireless features work reasonably well and the mobile input is a good feature that works too.
But for gods sake buy something else, they are not worth your time and money.
