VOL. 3... LIFE & TIMES OF S. CARTER nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album and "Big Pimpin' was nominated for Best Rap Performance By A Duo or Group.

On his fourth solo release, VOL. 3...LIFE AND TIMES OF S. CARTER, Jay-Z keeps his lyrics laced up with as many jewels as his wrists. Though he's one of hip-hop's most street-connected rappers, Jay manages his commercial success well, a trait that this album makes clear. The Rockwilder-produced "Do It Again," which features labelmate Beanie Siegel, seems destined to find a place in club mixes with its energetic beat and catchy phrases. Jay Hova joins forces with down-south kings U.G.K. for "Big Pimpin'," a Timbaland-produced gem. Other guest artists include Missy Elliott and Cash Money's Juvenile. With VOL. 3...LIFE AND TIMES OF S. CARTER, Jigga takes time away from ghostwriting for other rappers to show off some of his own skills.

What the critics say...

Rolling Stone (2/3/00, p.58) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...his strongest album to date, with music that's filled with catchy hooks, rump-shaking beats and lyrics fueled by Jay's hustler's vigilance....life is good for Jigga..."
Entertainment Weekly (1/14/00, pp.73-4) - "...[The album] reconnects with the people who ride those run-down trains [which] run through his Brooklyn neighborhood...with flair....The key track is 'Come and Get Me' in which [he] stares down the playa hatas over [beats] by Timbaland..." - Rating: B+
CMJ (1/24/00, p.30) - "...one of the most prolific hip-hop artists of our time....[delivers] a solid collection of mix-tape-ready gems that bring all coastal styles and aesthetics to the Brooklyn borough..."
The Source (3/00, p.256) - 4 mics out of 5 - "...[Jigga] reveals why he is the most influential hip-hop artist alive today. Songs like 'So Ghetto,' 'Do It Again' and 'Come and Get Me' highlight [his] uncanny ability to transform bumpin' tracks into cleverly crafted hip-hop anthems..."
NME (Magazine) (2/19/00, p.33) - 7 out of 10 - "...a series of uptempo party tunes much leavened by threats to the masculinity of competitors, as [he] uses his pen to cast himself as 'Dope Man', hustler, pimp and teacher....intelligent...Jay-Z spits venom one minute and cool out the next."
