Mortal Kombat (Classics) reviews

Ever been so mad that you want to rip someone in half? How about ripping their skin off? Or Dismembering them in countless different ways? If you answered yes to any of these, I think you should be kept away from sharp objects; but you'll probably love Mortal Kombat while playing it in your padded cell.

Not just cashing in on Nostalgia, Mortal Kombat is a prime example of the fighting game genre done right. The combos are accessible to even the most un-coordinated gamers and you'll be quickly throwing your enemies around while snapping some spines. The X-ray moves are fantastic and never feel unbalanced as they can be blocked, depleting your rival's special bar – another fantastic addition to gameplay.

All the (good) characters are here, as is the campy dialogue and story, however it never takes itself too seriously and integrates the fights well. The cutscenes are unskippable which can be immensely frustrating as some are bordering on 5 minutes long.

If you've ever liked or thought you might like Mortal Kombat, this is the game for you. It's brutal, hilarious, fast and long. The 300 strong challenge tower combined with the long campaign and countless combinations of multiplayer matches will keep you entertained for a bloody long time. Great value, fantastic game.

Quite possibly one of the games of the year in my book with an excellent graphics and hardcore action you could feel Shao Kahn himself punching you as you battle away to save Earth Realm from the Outer Realms innovation of Earth in an Effort to defeat Shao Kahn. Mortal Kombat also offers awesome multi-player action that you can enjoy with your friends when Tag teaming it to the top of the tower challenge! This game in my opinion will raise a new standard of video gaming entertainment!

Riding off the success of Mortal Kombat vs DC, the gang returns with MORTAL KOMBAT “9”.

It blends the retro 2D style fighting with a modern look that blends your fondest memories of Mortal Kombat and hands you an experience that will last for a while yet. Even if you're not a fan of Mortal Kombat, from “Test Your Luck” to the “Challenge Tower”, there is a lot here to test your skills.

This game does not take it self to seriously, but the genre and industry as a whole should. It re-defines the style of game back to the roots that made it such an icon. It is the new benchmark and hopefully the shot in the arm for the fighting genre it so desperately needs.

Mortal Kombat “9” is simply a joy to play.

Growing up as a kid I always loved playing Mortal Kombat on the Sega but these days the new reboots of MK such as Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe have been absolute rubbish, but now with the series returning to its ground roots of extreme violence and on a 2D playing field MK has never been this good, a massive amount of characters to play as and an interesting single player story on top of a ton of mini games and bonus's make this one of the best games I've played in a long time.

After waiting a number of years for the next good installment of Mortal Kombat it's great to see that it's gone back to what made the earlier games great.. extreme over the top violence ! With a polished look and feel to the game with unbelievable finishing moves and amazing arenas, this a fantastic game to keep you entertained for hours, definitely not one for the squeamish.

The graphic are amazing. Game play is good fun, love the story mode. Does take awhile to master the characters though

the most challenging mortal kombat game i've ever played!! really good story line, best graphics i've seen in a game yet i would highly recommend purchasing this game for a great fighting matches and new finishing moves online play becomes more interesting every time i play on it

A great addition to the mortal kombat series. Over the top gore in the krypt is a bit of a let down tho.

This persistent damage is purely cosmetic, but it does indeed add to the flavor. It helps convey how much these guys are pounding the hell out of each other, and when one finally stands tall as the winner, with his costume tattered and teeth showing through his jaw, it truly feels like a victory. Before, blood flew around the screen for the sake of blood flying around the screen; now, it helps sell the dark, macabre atmosphere.

Topping all this off are the aforementioned X-ray moves, which are devastating new attacks unique to this version of MK. Land one of these suckers and you can deal up to 50% damage, which, while cool for comebacks, is perhaps too much. We want to always have a chance at victory, but uh, some of these moves can turn the tide in a very un-fun way.

One of the best things about Mortal Kombat's Fatality system is that it tempts you to flirt with disaster. The last drops of stamina are smacked from your opponent, the iconic cry of “Finish Him!” rings out, and then everyone holds their breath as they wait to see what happens next. Your sweaty hands skitter across the pad, scrabbling for the arcane sequence that unlocks the ultimate prize. Pull it off, and you'll bask in the utter humiliation of your rival; screw up, and your fighter will simply jerk back and forth in a pathetic dance – and a decidedly non-fatal one, at that. It's embarrassing when this happens, and most of the time you'll wish that you'd simply plumped for an unimpressive-but-safe uppercut. Yes, you won the match – but in most people's eyes, you lost.

I love this game it's got a great story and the way the game flows is amazing.

I first experienced the joys of a Mortal Kombat Fatality as a teenager and this game with it's improved graphics and awesome gameplay brought back memories of countless hours battling friends in an attempt to master the all important Fatality. Play through the tournament or take on the tag team mode -I enjoyed this game immensely.

Ever since buying this, the flatmates and I have had great fun playing as different characters or trying out the story mode. Always loved Mortal Kombat. Never disappoints.

One of the best fighters out there but it freezes frequently. I'm not sure if its the game or my xbox but it gets pretty annoying. Fortunately the game does have a pretty good auto-save system.

Just like the original Mortal Kombats before it went 3D. Loved how they amalgamated all the characters from Mortal Kombat 1 to 3 and created one story spanning all 3. Gruesomely great game.

Good game, fairly brutal as all MK. Very Linear story line. Apart from that, a very good game!

This game was well thrashed by my husband and our oldest son. Easy to use and fun to play, good graphics!

The laws changed in the late 90s; it is only illegal to sell refused classification material, not import it from overseas, unless you live in Western Australia or the Northern Territory.

Amazing graphics, intense story line, awesome rewards, and ridiculous detail to gore, all in all this game is brilliant! Wicked fun to play alone and with my mates, love it!
