"A short, linear and ultimately average shooter."
3 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

You’ve got to give credit to any shooter that deviates from the shoot-your-way-to-the-end-of-the-level formula, but Rage isn’t quite as revolutionary as the hype suggests. It adds the element of driving from mission to mission through a series of narrow canyons that link the mission areas. This is fine but you shouldn’t mistake this for sandbox or some kind of “open world”.

At its heart Rage is a solid, but fairly standard and linear shooter. There are settlements where you can pick up jobs, buy and sell and participate in races. You can interact with NPCs in a very limited way in that they talk to you but you don’t talk back or have any option how to respond except to accept or decline a job. These little settlements are cool but they’re not particularly well fleshed out or elaborate, and here the ugly spectre of linear gameplay raises its head. You first come to Dan Hagar’s settlement, you do all his jobs then you’re allowed to move on to Wellsprings. You do all the Wellsprings jobs then the story takes you on to a new area and Subway Town. Do all Subway Town’s missions ect ect. Not to say it’s bad, but you shouldn’t think the gameworld is a huge free-roaming sandbox with settlements and other locations that you can travel back and forth between at will.

The mission areas are even more linear, and here the game makes its most fatal mistake and degenerates into the aforementioned shoot-your-way-to-the-end-of-the-levels… Very, very linear levels. The levels look great, with their wonderfully derelict, post apocalyptic look which I adore, but it’s not enough to keep me from getting bored. The combat itself is solid and enjoyable, but what makes the levels even more tedious is the very limited type of enemies you face. It’s either the same one or two types of bandits, or one or two types of mutants, or one or two types of Authority enforcers ect. And for the most part the enemies behave completely predictably. Mutants will charge you mindlessly, while anyone armed with a firearm will hunker down behind some cover and stubbornly refuse to budge. It’s not until much later in the game where the enemies finally start to mix it up a bit and some may rush you while others stay back to cover them. This behaviour is rare however.

The game has a few other neat little features like modifying your vehicle, and to a lesser extent your weapons, a rather elaborate crafting system and there’s even some character customisation when early in the game you’re given the option of one of three armour types that give a particular benefit. You see yourself occasionally in the gameworld, but you can also check yourself out in the journal. The journal is where you keep track of your inventory, weapons and jobs and craft items (I’d prefer it if you required a work bench or something instead). Then there’s the driving, which I have to say is quite cool, but for me it’s a bit too arcady, with floating pickups that you drive over to get bonuses and endlessly respawning enemy vehicles.

Something I certainly don’t like is the profoundly stupid defibrillator which magically brings you back to life whenever you are killed. This is just thinly veiled player respawn which sucks. It removes most of the challenge from the game because it’s almost impossible for you to actually die. You will die occasionally and have to reload, but most of the time the defibrillator will bring you back, after you’ve activated it with a stupid mini game. On top of that your health auto regenerates very quickly, and you have bandages that you can apply even in the thick of combat to instantly and fully replenish your health. I loathe auto health regen, but it seems to be just something you have to put up with in modern shooters, but hey… At least it doesn’t use the checkpoint save system. You can save and load as you like.

So a solid shooter if not particularly long and nowhere near as revolutionary as you may have been led to believe. The setting is great, the shooting mechanics and controls work well, but the game suffers greatly from linear level design, repetitive and predictable combat, and a lack of dramatic narrative and emotional impetus.

"...Meh"

This game is good. Don't get me wrong, but i think that the hype its being given here is a little to overwhelming. I honestly recommend hiring it out at the local video store before buying it. And if you enjoyed Borderlands, just don't bother playing it. As it will constantly feel like its missing the mark every time.

The graphics are great and the story is fun. But otherwise, wait till its on sale.

"Could have been better"
3 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Amazing graphical world. The dungeons where the fights build up to the boss were intense. But the ending of the game was very disappointing.

The loading screens seem a bit long too. And when they do load they offer some tips. Best one telling you to explore everything but the game shoehorns you in such a way that areas that look interesting to explore are blocked off.

"Great game that didn't live up to its potential!"
3 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Rage is a great game don't get me wrong but I felt it didn't deliver much in the story line aspect of the game.

Firstly Rage is a FPS (Free Person Shooter) and if you play Call of Duty or any other shooter type games you will find Rage an easy game to pick up on. In Rage it feels like every shot or hit you make on an enemy has power behind it, which is great as it makes the game more enjoyable.

Rage is a mixture between fallout (in a way) and Death race. It is great fun driving around in a fully armoured out car blowing up bandits and then getting rewarded for makes for great fun.

But for the story line will take you about 12 hours (give or take a few) to complete and seems rushed as you don't feel satisfied finishing the game as you would like in let's say Mass Effect 2, where you feel like your the man and everyone is looking up to you. It was a great disappointment and if there is a Rage 2 I hope this is fixed next game.

Apart from that the game scores high in graphics, Combat/gameplay, Free roaming and has a lot of interesting side quests to do . It is a must buy only if the price is relatively low.

"Wow. beautiful well rounded game"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

the new id tech engine 5 is a beautifully designed well rounded engine. The only downside is the environment physics (basically its one texture this disallows damage to the terrain) however aside that small issue, the campaign itself is brilliant. the collaboration between id and bethesda brings 2 of my favourite game styles together (thematically i guess) there are moments in the game when i felt like i was playing fallout 3 mixed with doom (including fallout 2 in some scenes.) have spent 5 hours on it since arrival and cannot get off it.

the anarchy edition comes with more maps and more weapons in your arsenal (i have been one punching mutants with the fists of rage)

at this price. highly recommended! thanks mighty ape!

"good value for some Nazi blasting" Purchased on Mighty Ape

Quite a fun WWII romp! GTA Style open world where explosives and sneaky tactics rule the day. Ramp up the difficulty first time through and you have a good challenging sabotage game.

Steal Nazi outfits and play wolf among sheep, infiltrate large bases and plant explosives in free roam or follow the fairly simple but enjoyable story mode.

7/10 – impressive enough for its age!

Thought this game might be a borderland mixed with fallout but was disapointed but still happy as this game is still pretty good but could be allot better.

"Dumb fun"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Rage is fun heaps. Of my friends said it wasn't that great but it was pretty good. I didn't like race parts And the story was the same old end the word type story. But the game play was fun. Its like borderlands but it has better graphics

"Cool game ,great price" Purchased on Mighty Ape

I payed $14.99 for this game and it was well worth it. I'm having a lot of fun with it ,i would recommend it 8) .

"Fallout esq"

Its more of a direct mission approach to an RPG. Alot of post apocalyptic rpgs out there, worth $10, worth $100.

BUY IT YOU FOOL

"Hmm--"
2 stars"

When I turned this game on I was expecting something alone the lines of fallout, but that was far from what I got, in this case bethesda screwed up, gameplay sucks and so does the storyline

"Great game, a lot like borderlands, but so much better!"

Takes some time to get into, but once you understand the mechanics, its incredible. It has some of the best boss battles in modern gaming

I highly recommend this game, I'm always playing it now lol

"A great surround sound killer!"
4 stars"

We got our new surround sound connected a few days before I bought this game, and afterwards it stays at a medium level, due to the amount of times it made me squeal like a 5 year old.

RAGE is one of those games that gives you chills, and scares you silly all in the same second. I was always a huge fan of Doom and Quake, and this was no different. Taking a mix of Doom, with Unreal Tournament, put together with a Jak and Daxter feel, after around 12 hours of gameplay, it was finished.

The HD quality in the gameplay was brilliant, and the shooting of bandits, and mutants was awesome. The first kill was the best as gameplay would get progressively harder, but the guns would get better. Finding secret rooms with RC Bomb Cars, taking down authority guards with Pulse Cannons, and blowing mutants to pieces with an ME Grenade, made great fun for me.

The only downside of this game, was that is simply wasn't long enough. The ending happened all of a sudden, and it leaves it open for a second game, which could bode well for fans like myself.

Great game, can't wait for more!

"RENT IT FIRST"

Yea ok different story line from your normal FPS,but felt so much like Borderlands it wasn't even funny. If you're a fan of Borderlands then you may like this however I got bored rather quickly. Not to mention there are 3 disks,and if you install games to your hard drive as I do,then be prepared to lose 22gig of space.

"Great Game Cheap Price" Purchased on Mighty Ape

If you like shooter games, give this one ago. The game looks good and plays well. A bit of a blend of RPG & Shooter. Once I put this in my xbox I havent taken it out a real joy to play.

"Good Shooter abit Short" Purchased on Mighty Ape

Really enjoyed it but ended abruptly though. Could have been alot longer with more missions and jobs to do. Maybe in the sequel.

"Damn excellent game - a must play"

The best game I have seen in a long time the finish is beautiful no bugs in this one.Fluid and stunning graphics this is a game that is sure to excite.

"Ummmm are these previous reviews for real-"
2 stars"

Don't know who posted most of those previous reviews but I would definitely hire it before you buy it…I hated fallout and this is sort of similar, graphics are cool but the shooting and aiming is not what I expected and basic as..... Its $40 now for a reason and I expected alot more from it, wish I'd got dead island or battlefield 3 first.

"Excellent Graphics with potential to Grow." Purchased on Mighty Ape

The Graphics and Gameplay on this game are of the best available. Definatley one of the best games of the year. On the down side there are 2 drawbacks, firstly co-op should be 4 player options, and the actual campaign should be longer, although I can see the potential for the developers 2 easily add more towns to play as DLC's. All in All 8 out of 10 for me.

"Great game and great service"

Purchased on Mighty Ape

Brought the game for my husband's birthday and he loves it. Mighty Ape present products for great value which is balanced with superb customer service

"Wow what an outstanding game"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

For those older gamers out there who remember Doom and the original Resident Evil then this is the game for you. Even if you don't remember those games but love an excellent shoot em up game that requires a bit of thought then you'll love this game. Fantastic value for money with a 2 disc game, plus and additional disc for online play – we've been playing for days and still haven't reached the end. Well recommended.

"A great action shooter adventure!"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Quite possibly some of the best fps combat in any game ever with an awesome graphics engine! Not and rpg, but more of an action adventure somewhat like a fps version of jak 3. Also an interesting game element of looting everything like borderlands but not for guns but parts in which you engineer gadgets. Nothing majorly revolutionary but well worth if you are after a decent single player fps.. also the car combat if quite good too.

"Rage, awesome game, just not long enough."
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

really enjoyed this game, high graphics and a bit of free-rome with fast moving, constantly jumping creatures who react to the environment in a number of ways. However because of the short storyline, the fact that creatures do not respawn after you kill them and because you get locked out of certain areas because of the mission related environmental changes i won't be likely to play it through again, at least not for awhile anyway.

"Fun but short"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Really fun gameplay, stunning graphics, and smart AI, all at a smooth 60 fps. The only downside is it's single player is not very long and has no replayability.

"Despite all my Rage I'm still just a rat in a cage"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Rage is pretty in its desloation. In fact it's probably the best looking game on console. It's not subtle but for id software who are known for their focus on making good game engines rather than plot development its depth is a comparatively refreshing direction for id. It is fun game but don't expect the free roam, depth and rpg elements of fallout or borderlands. The driving elements work and there is a lot of customization and unlocks, it isn't forza but it's a change of pace. Along with the racing there are a raft of mini games much like red dead redemption providing small diversions from the main story.

All in all rage delivers it runs disconcertingly well on a console and looks fantastic, a hard drive install is a must as it installs the high res texture packs to the hard drive instead of streaming from the disk I haven't even dug into the multi and co op modes as yet As with most of id's games they provide a solid engine and will no doubt power the next several years worth of games, although its baby steps id has stretched themselves out of their comfort zone of linear shooters with Rage and for the most part its a bigger maze but the illusion of choice is a nice touch.

"Another great game from the pieoneers!"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Made by the creators of the first First Person Shooter, ID have merged this genre with a little bit of RPG to create an interesting blend which is great fun.

"RAGE is a must have game!"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

When I first saw this game, I didn't think much of it. Until 12 hours after playing it, I decided that it should win game of the year, easily. This game far out stood my expectations. The new ID5 engine is absolutely amazing, and the gameplay and story line is just perfect. The ending was a bit… meh, but still I highly recommend it to any gamer! Bethesda has outdone themselves.

"Great gameplay, graphics and storyline BUT"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Great gameplay, graphics and story line BUT its a bit short, even if you do all of the side missions (which are fairly easy to say the least) the game is done in around 10 hours (ish) Dont get me wrong, its the most enjoyable 10 hours ive spent in a while but i felt almost cheated at the way it ended and you dont get the chance to go back to finish anything you may of missed (i guess that adds to the reply value) All in all a stunning game to look at and the game play is highly entertaining (some of the dialogue made me laugh out loud).
