A Great story, great characters, all round very enjoyable movie, very easy to watch.
Stardust is in my opinion better than its main rivals Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter.
The movie at its core is a typical young man initiation story BUT the parallel story lines provides a V8 engine boost to what could have been an average story. The young man finds a “fallen star” who happens to take a human form while on earth.
Michelle Pfeiffer is brilliant as the evil old witch type character, who adds urgency to the story as she is obsessed by youth which is depleted by use of her magic. The only way for her to stay young is to cut out and eat the heart of a “fallen star”, and she will stop at nothing to do that.
The visual effects are spectacular. In particular the snakey green tendrils that shoot from the tips of the witch's fingers and the brilliant airborne pirate ship.
Robert de Niro plays the Captain of the pirate ship, and delivers an excellent yet campy performance which you have to see to believe.
If you like fantasy movies then Stardust should be in your collection. The villian is fleshed out well, is fast paced, and there is enough alteration to the traditional coming of age to story keep the whole family hooked right to the end.
