Two things killed this for me.
- The level design is horrible. Totally linear and completely unsurprising: “Corridor, narrow path between burnt out cars, Oh, some ammo and health packs.. Ooh look an open area, there must be a fight coming up”.
- The AI is beyond horrible. You can either sit in the battle view and micromanage your 2 imbeciles or you leave them to follow your lead and you'll die… A lot.
“No1 go over there and take cover, No2 go flank them on the other side. No No1, don't follow him, stay in cover. Look No2, when I sent No1 back into cover, that didn't mean you could stop in plain view and look confused, oh look you're dead. Oh No1 is now running over to heal No2 in the middle of that open area and now he's dead too. Guess I'll reload.”
The idea had a lot of promise and the mechanics all work pretty well. I don't know if they didn't have the budget for good level and AI design, or whether it was rushed out before those guys could do their job, but whatever the reason, they really screwed it up.
