"Rugby Challenge 2.1"
2 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Plays and looks same as Rugby Challenge 2 but with more licenses for teams and tournaments. Frustrating that there is a limit to how many teams you can download from the FanHub, as they are more accurate than the teams provided on disc. Also disappointing to see last year's Super Rugby Rosters (they have had a few months to sort that out) and the ITM Cup still in a one division round robin format (a couple of years to sort this out)

If you want a rugby game for your PS4 then it's worth getting but don't expect much improvement from Rugby Challenge 2

"I am shocked by what i'm seeing"

Apologies for the tone of my earlier review. I was just so shocked by what the game turned out to be that i kind of vented on that. I'd like to post something more constructive now so here goes. This game was just Rugby Challenge 2 with some content tacked on. It was essentially just RC2 with poorly implemented DLC. They didnt do anything to it graphically, its the same game, same commentary, same everything. The trouble is, they did it badly this time around. The title screen is amateurish. The music and commentary audio is now implemented so badly that the audio breaks up. The music file used is at such a low bit rate that it sounds just horrible. They might have tweaked some player models but that is something myself and the RC2 modding community did years ago. In fact the stuff we produced was better than this. They have possibly added some post processing to some cut scenes but thats it. RC3 is now far less polished than RC2. In fact, RC2 on a PS3 looks and sounds much better than RC3 on a PS4, which is astounding. As for the new DLC they've added to RC2 (sorry did i say that, i really meant, the new content in RC3).....The sevens mode is just a stripped down 15 a side mode with minimal game play tweaks and the on field logo and strips changed (stuff that could have been done by one guy sitting at home with a cheap PC). The team rosters are horribly out of date. It's not good enough to ship a game this late with last years content and say “you can get new rosters from the player hub” that is the worst kind of lazy. Speaking of the player hub. You can only download players and teams with no way to preview them to know if they are correct. You can only download blind and hope for the best. You cant download new strips or balls or shoes or more importantly, stadiums. The user interface for the game is bugged. At one point there were two fonts in the menu overlaid over each other. Not only is the team roster out of date but the whole Super Rugby competition is out of date, meaning that while you can download a player generated version of the Sunwovles or Jaguares you cant add them to a Super Rugby season because the game is set in 2015 and those team didnt exist last year – yes thats right, when you start your super rugby season all the dates are set in in April 2015. I did have a little fun with some online games but i many online opponents would leave the game when it became clear they were about to lose – The game didnt penalise them for this at all and so I lost hard earned points. As for ‘Be a Pro’ mode. I'm pretty sure a lot of that was in RC2 anyway as part of ‘My Career’ or something like that. They have thrown in an additional kicking meter but it adds nothing really to the game. They have tweaked maybe some aspects of the breakdown but those changes are minimal. To sum up…This game is a cash in made with minimal effort – The new developers (Wicked Witch) have simply used assets from RC1 &2 but used them very badly. Its not a new game. Its the exact same game as RC2 with a couple of extra features tacked on. There are community modders for RC2 that have made content ten times better. The game is broken in many ways. The Crusaders dont even have a real home stadium just some abomination called Canterbuty Stadium that appears to be actually set in Canada (im not joking – look at the pic of the stadium before you play it).

Im just going to stop here..there just too much wrong and I really could go on all day. I dont know how it is that Wicked Witch studios can claim to be the offical developers. All they have done is add really bad and broken DLC to an actual bonafide game (Rugby Challenge 2) made by New Zealand game developer, Sidhe. I was expecting something amazing from a Rugby game on current gen technology. What I got was the same game I had already been playing (RC2), on last gen consoles that somehow manages to look and play much worse. I have since sold my cope of RC3 and have now moved on. Ill continue to play RC2 modded on PC because its the same game only better. Im giving the game one star because its the same game as RC2 (witch is a good game and deserves 4 stars), but this version is broken and should not be supported.

""underwhelmed""
2 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

While I purchased this game with low expectations (obviously not expecting graphics/player movement etc to be up to Madden and FIFA standards) I was still shocked at the lack of effort put into this game. At first glance: Super Rugby not even including the Sunwolves, Jaguares and Kings as new teams… Last years player kits… And outdated rosters. May have got away with this as a pre-Rugby World Cup release, but to release while the 2016 Super Season is in full swing is just lazy.

The game is ‘predictably unpolished’. I really just wanted an easy to play rugby game that was a step up from RC2. Would not recommend forking out $99 as it is simply not worth it it comparison to other next gen games available… Would wait until it drops to $50ish
