Description

Now in paperback, Broken is the the story of a woman’s transformaton through her work with an Arapahoe medicine man and horse trainer.

Lisa Jones, a forty-seven-year-old writer, went to Wyoming for a four-day magazine assignment and came home four years later with a new life. At a dusty corral on the Wind River Indian Reservation, she met Stanford Addison, a Northern Arapaho medicine man and horse trainer who seemed to transform everything around him. He tamed horses and could heal people of everything from cancer to bipolar disorder. He did all this from a wheelchair; he had been a quadriplegic for more than two decades following a violent accident when he was twenty.

Intrigued, Lisa watched and listened. She saw neighbours and visitors come from miles away, seeking guidance and healing for what had broken in their lives. Over the years Lisa immersed herself in Stanford’s life, the reservation, and its people, exposing and healing the places where she, too, was broken. In the tradition of Eat Pray Love, Jones documents her soul-shifting spiritual journey, exploring powerful spirits, material poverty, spiritual wealth, friendship, violence, confusion, death, and above all else, “a love that comes before and after and above and below romantic love.”

Reviews

"Jones writes beautifully about the natural world, knows how to bring the people she encounters alive on the page and tells a gutsy, moving story about a significant passage in her own life." Washington Post

“Jones locates herself beautifully in a story that is hers and not hers. This is her first book. We look forward to the next.” Los Angeles Times

"As the subtitle suggests, this is indeed a love story, but not in the typical romantic sense. It is a chronicle of the author's spiritual journey and growth and a peek at the realities of life on an Indian reservation. Jones has worked as a journalist for over 20 years in the rural West. On assignment for Smithsonian magazine, she travels to the Northern Arapaho community at Wind River Indian Reservation to write an article about a quadriplegic Native American reputed to be an expert horse trainer and medicine man. Jones finds herself immersed in an unfamiliar culture that initially makes her very uncomfortable. The routine journalistic assignment grows in depth and breadth, as Jones introduces the reader to Stanford Addison and his extended family, their horses, and their acceptance of a life that is challenging yet somehow appropriate. The author has a knack for describing events, people, and scenery so well that the reader can almost taste the weak, sugary coffee and feel the oppressive heat of the ceremonial sweat lodge. Compelling reading for those interested in Native American culture and personal journeys of self-discovery." Library Journal
