""New Beginnings" is right..."
3 stars"

IĀ rated this three starsĀ ā€“ I'll tell you why.

In so many people'sĀ minds, especially those who grew up with the old series, Tom Baker was the Doctor. He was the longest serving, and most recognizable of them all. Keeper of Traken and Logopolis are his last two episodes. As is mentioned in the special features of these discs, there was a new production team that wanted to take the show in a new direction, and that meant replacing Tom Baker, who by his own testimony, was hard to work with. But all they knew is that they wanted changeĀ ā€“ they had no idea what to replace himĀ with.

The TARDIS starts with the Doctor and one companion, and ends up with three companions by the end of the three serials. It got crowded, with too much reference to anything but a plotline. Also, the evergreen (and black in this case) Master returns, and steals a body (Anthony Ainley) in which he appears for the best part of the next 8Ā years of Doctor Who serials.

New Doctor, new staff, new companions, new MasterĀ ā€“ but directionless. The storyline in Castrovalva is OK, but the special effects are enough to make you cringe. (That goes for all three serials).

The more IĀ watch it, the better it gets, but IĀ make you no promises.

"For the die-hard fans..."
3 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

As a collection, it is fantastic to own the story-lines that relate to the demise of the Fourth Doctor, and the introduction of the fifth. With the amount of fractured and individual Doctor Who DVDs out there, New Beginnings is a great set to own to get a sense of the following story arcs of the classic Doctor Who series. Unfortunately, the shows themselves are very much dated, and can be a bit of a chore to watch (if you're a fan of the new Doctor Whos). Whilst the storyline, events and characters are enjoyable, IĀ recommend this product for the die-hard fan, as jumping into the Doctor Who universe at this point may leave newer viewers quite confused, and a little put off by the production values of the yester-years.

Description

New Beginnings is the eagerly awaited DVD release that charts the end of the Tom Baker era and the start of Peter Davison's. Each of the three stories features the return of the Doctor'sĀ arch-enemy the Master, played for the first time by Anthony Ainley.

Doctor Who: New Beginnings is a three-disc boxed set that contains the stories The Keeper of Traken, Logopolis and Castrovalva.

The Keeper of Traken 1981Ā ā€“ Tom Baker (4th Doctor)
Returning to N-Space, The Doctor and Adric are summoned to Traken, a planet of peace and harmony, where The Keeper of Traken is nearing the end of his 1000Ā year old keeper-ship and one of the Counsels of Traken is to become the next Keeper. Where The Doctor, Adric, Tremas, one of the Counsels elected to become Keeper and Tremas'sĀ daughter Nyssa set out to stop the evil Melkur, believed to be a ā€œSource of Evilā€ that is trying to destroy the Union. Only to discover Melkur is being used by a old enemy of the Doctor, The Master, who plans to take control of The Source, The Union'sĀ keystone, so he can regenerate into a newĀ body.

Logopolis 1981Ā ā€“ Tom Baker
The Doctor takes Adric and a young air hostess named Tegan Jovanka, who has come aboard the TARDIS by accident, to the planet Logopolis, home of a race of mathematicians whose help he hopes to enlist in reconfiguring the outer shell of the TARDIS. The mysterious, wraith-like Watcher brings Nyssa from Traken to join them and warns of impending dangerĀ ā€“ something that is borne out as the Master arrives and kills a number of the Logopolitans.

Castrovalva 1982Ā ā€“ Peter Davison (5th Doctor)
The newly regenerated Doctor escapes with his companions back to the TARDIS. Suffering from post-regeneration trauma, he only narrowly manages to save the ship from destruction as it plunges back to Event One, the hydrogen in-rush that preceded the creation of the universe. He then seeks sanctuary in the peaceful domain of Castrovalva, only to discover that it is an illusory, dimensionally paradoxical trap set for him by the Master with the unwilling aid of a kidnappedĀ Adric.
