Description

Haynes Military Land Rover Enthusiasts' Manual (1948 onwards – series II/IIA to Defender) – an insight into the history, development, production and roles of the British Armys light four-wheel-drive vehicle.

‘This book is a real must for any military Land Rover enthusiast’ Land Rover Monthly

Land Rovers have been used by the military since they were introduced, in Series I form, in 1948. The Land Rover's rugged, ‘go-anywhere’ reputation has led to its use in a vast number of military roles, from general-purpose workhorse to special forces reconnaissance vehicle, ambulance, communications vehicle and weapons platform. Additionally, a number of one-off prototypes have been produced for various trials. This manual provides a unique insight into the world of military Land Rovers, with an emphasis on military operation and equipment.

  • Development – origins, development, military trials and modifications, midlife rebuild.
  • Purpose-built including air-portable general purpose (APGP), Series IIA & III ‘lightweight’, Defender 127/130 gun tractor, Wolf Defender XD.
  • Conversions – ambulance, anti-tank, appliqué armour, command vehicle, fire-fighting, Special Forces vehicles, weapons mount.
  • Licence-built military Land Rovers.
  • The soldier's view – working with the Land Rover in British Army service and service overseas.
  • The civilian's view – buying a military Land Rover, parts availability, originality, restoration, driving, handling, safety, tax and insurance.
  • The mechanic's view – tools and fasteners, maintenance and repairs, day-to-day problems and reliability issues.
  • Appendices – identification, technical specifications, documentation, useful contacts and glossary.
