"Very, very good!"
5 stars"

A lovely adaptation. Follows the book quite well, all the main events are protrayed that I thought needed to be. Some of the speeches are a bit different and don't give the same atmosphere I got when reading the book, but it's really not an issue. VERY well acted, I cried three times the first time I watched it. Definitely a must for anyone who likes this kind of drama/adapation as it's well worth the watch. Also, if you are a fan of the yummy Richard Armitage who plays the male lead, you will love it!

This beautifully crafted adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South brings the early victorian period to life!! Staring Richard Armitage (Robin Hood, more recently as seen on Spooks) in one of his finest and most powerful roles. A must for anyone who loves period drama and historical romance, its powerful and gritty not your average sacrine sop story!

Description

A powerful BBC adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's feisty and passionate love story, set across the social divides in the changing world of Victorian industrial society.

Margaret Hale is one of literatures most original heroines: a southerner from a country vicarage newly settled in the industrial northern town of Milton. In the shock of her move, she misjudges charismatic cotton mill-owner John Thornton, whose strength of purpose and passion are a match for her own pride and wilfulness. When the workers of Milton call a strike, Margaret takes their side, and the two are brought into deeper conflict. As events spiral out of control, Margaret – to her surprise – begins to fall in love with Thornton.
