Private Peaceful is a 2012 British film based on the popular book for older children by Michael Morpurgo.
Private Peaceful is a classic rite of passage story. The story follows two brothers and the exuberance and pain of their teenage love for the same girl, the pressures of their feudal family life, the horrors and folly of war, and the ultimate price of courage and cowardice.
Reminiscent of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Private Peaceful is a gritty and realistic tale of love and death set in the fields of Devon and the Word War 1 battlefields of Flanders, giving us a heart-breaking glimpse of the way we once lived and still die. Starring Richard Griffiths in one of his last movie roles before his death earlier this year.
Private Peaceful Movie Review
“The second of Michael Morpurgo’s World War I stories to be adapted for the screen is an interesting contrast to Steven Spielberg’s War Horse, being a smaller scale, more conventional British period piece. One terrible night on the Western Front, Tommo Peaceful (George MacKay) looks back on the Devon childhood he and cheeky elder brother Charlie (Jack O’Connell) knew, the girl they both loved and the cruel events leading to court martial and tragedy at dawn. With the feel of prestige telly, it's nicely done, sweet and moving.” Empire
