Remembering Sir Ed: A Tribute To Sir Edmund Hillary is a TVNZ documentary paying tribute to a legend and looking at Sir Edmund Hillary’s life after summiting Mt Everest, and the legacy he’s left behind.
Sir Edmund Hillary was the last great twentieth century explorer and adventurer. He is the only person on the planet who has stood on the top of Everest and at the North and South Poles. His craggy features, tousled hair, grin and lumbering gait are easily recognizable and are what the world knows and remembers him for. For Sir Ed, his wish was to be remembered for more than a hard climb up a steep mountain!
This documentary fulfils that wish. it goes beyond the climbing, the fame and the knighthood and explores the sum of what his life really was – his extraordinary life and affinity for the people of Nepal. These are hardy proud people not given to readily displaying their emotions, but their eyes brim with tears when asked to describe their relationship with the “Burra sahib”. “he is our mother and our father.” they respond quietly.
“If my life ended tomorrow I would have little cause for complaint – I have gathered a few successes, a handful of honours and more love and laughter than I probably deserve. For me the most rewarding moments have not always been the great moments – for what can surpass a tear on your departure, joy on your return, or a trusting hand in yours?” Sir Edmund Hillary, “Nothing Venture Nothing Win” Published 1988.
Remembering Ed – a Tribute to Sir Edmund Hillary was made during the last
months of his life with complete support of his family and friends. It is a
definitive look at his life beyond
the summiting of everest.
Presented by cartoonist and close friend, Tom Scott.
