It's not a terrible book. It is essentially elements of Nietzsche, Ayn Rand and Ragnar Redbeard (very similar to Might Is Right in parts, Might Is Right being the far superior) all mangled into the one plagiarised and inconsistent book but it's still readable.

I enjoyed it more when I read it before studying philosophy. Now it is less appealing but still, worth giving it a go if you want something to keep you occupied for such a low price.

I should point out that the title is slightly misleading; it isn't Satanism in the traditional sense. It is an atheistic worldview which is largely rejected by theistic Satanists, though does bear some similarities. Like I said before, it is mostly a rip-off of philosophers who LaVey clearly admired, but can work as a kind of introduction to them.

"Interesting, somewhat lighthearted and lacks shock value."

This book is divided into several parts, and all very interesting. Obviously not your average ‘bible’, of the sort, but mantras, spells and philosophies of LaVey. It doesn't seem as official or serious through the flamboyant metaphors and it is worked through greatly with the British-flavoured language of LaVey. It's like Nietzsche and Might is Right's philosophy diluted and filtered, however it does state clearly not to take everything at face value. Some parts are just a bit silly and sounds like LaVey intends to make a joke, and as you can probably tell I'm still not too sure what I think about it. It's obvious the author was trying to make it as simple as possible, however perhaps pushed that into ‘too simple’, and lacks all shock value I expected, despite the big language. LaVey was an eccentric man, which shows through this work and is perhaps worth a try to open the mind into some ‘other’ beliefs and philosophies.

Description

Called "The Black Pope" by many of his followers, Anton La Vey began the road to High Priesthood of the (lurch of Satan when he was only 16 years old and an organ player in a carnival:

""On Saturday night I would see men lusting after halfnaked girls dancing at the carnival, and on Sunday morning when I was playing the organ for tent-show evangelists at the other end of the carnival lot, I would see these same men sitting in the pews with their wives and children, asking God to forgive them and purge them of carnal desires. And the next Saturday night they'd be back at The carnival or some other place of indulgence.

"I knew then that the Christian Church thrives on hypocrisy, and that man's carnal nature will out!""

From that time early in his life his path was clear. Finally, on the last night of April, 1966 -- "Walpurgisnacht," the most important festival of the believers in witchcraft -- LaVey shaved his head in the tradition of Ancient executioners and announced the formation of The Church Of Satan. He had seen the need for a church that would recapture man's body and his carnal desires as objects of celebration. ""Since worship of fleshly things produces pleasure," he said, "there would then be a temple of glorious indulgence . . .""

Author Biography:

Anton Szandor LaVey,[1] (April 11, 1930 - October 29, 1997) born Howard Stanton Levey, was the American founder and High Priest of the Church of Satan as well as a writer, occultist, and musician. He was the author of The Satanic Bible and the founder of LaVeyan Satanism, a synthesized system of his understanding of human nature and the insights of philosophers who advocated materialism and individualism, for which he claimed no "supernatural inspiration”.
