Excerpt from A Digest of the Parish Registers Within the Diocese of Llandaff Previous to 1836: Together With a Table of the Bishops' Transcripts, to 1812, Now in Existence in the Bishop's Registry, With Inventories of the Act Books of the Bishops of Llandaff Since 1660; And Those of the Dean and Chapter Since 1575 Reports dealing with the progress of the work were presented to the Conferences of 1902, 1903, and 1904, during which time the constitution of the Committee underwent some changes. Enquiry into the Parochial Records was commenced by the issue of a letter signed by the Chairman on behalf of the Committee, to the Incumbents of the Parishes that existed prior to 1836 (a copy of the letter appears as Appendix The year 1836 was adopted as the limit, as subsequent to it, the Civil Registration Act came into operation. The names of such Parishes Were ascertained by reference to the Census Report made in 1831, which contained a list of the Registers throughout England and Wales then existing. The letter, as will be seen, foreshadowed a much wider sphere of enquiry than was subsequently undertaken. The work was eventually restricted, as the Committee realized that they were unable usefully to carry out it, and that much of it should more properly devolve upon individual historians.
