Description

Excerpt from A Discourse Commemorative of Amos Lawrence: Delivered by Request of the Students, in the Chapel of Williams College And the property thus acquired, and thus esti mated, he knew how to use. He employed it in establishing his children about him, who seem to have lived in harmony, and to have been to him a source of great comfort. He employed it also in sustaining the bountiful hospitality of the east. The stranger, says he, did not lodge in the street, but I opened my doors to the traveller. And especially did he employ his wealth in providing for the wants of the poor. If, says he, I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail; or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof; if I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering; if his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep; if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate, then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.
