Description

Excerpt from A Few Concise Examples of Seven Hundred Errors in Shakspeare's Plays, Now Corrected and Elucidated: And Which Have Afforded Abundant Scope for Critical Animadversion; And Hitherto Held at Defiance the Penetration of All Shakspeare's Commentators WE have had some, but not many, instances where the-fos tering hand of patronage has been denied to genius: this, my predecessors never experienced they found no difficulty in oh taining a liberal compensation for their labours from the Book sellers; for, celebrity of name stamped merit on whatever their genius produced, and was considered a tower of strength by their respective publishers. But whether my production pos sesses merit or not whether it displays superiority, or is inferior to their comments, it hasbeen alike rejected by every book seller to whom I ofl'ered it for publication. But I cannot blame those gentlemen; prejudice has operated with equal force on their minds as on the learned critics', and wherefore, but from the angry lash which illiberal criticism has laid on my predecessors.
