Excerpt from A Journal of the Life of Thomas Story: Containing, an Account of His Remarkable Convincement Of, and Embracing the Principles of Truth, as Held by the People Called Quakers; And Also of His Travels and Labours in the Service of the Gospel, With Many Other Occurrences and Observations This was in the Year 1688, about which Time came the News of the Qieen's being with Child and the Papif'ts, being greatly overjoyed there ar, made Bone-fires in the Market-place, and, in a publick, exalted, and trium phant Manner, drank Healths to the young Prince: And I being a Spectator, with many other young Men of the Town, the Officers called feveral of us to drink the Health with them and then I took occaiion to afk one of the Cap tains, how they knew the Child would be a Prince might it not happen to be a Princefs? No, replied he, Sir, that cannot be, for this Child comes by the Prayers of the Church the Church has prayed for a Prince, and it can be no otherwife. And, when the News came of his Birth, they made another great Fire in the fame Place where they drank Wine, till, with that, and the Tran fport of the News, they were exceedingly diffracted, throwing their Hats into the F ire at one Health, their Coats at the next, their vvaillcoats at a third, and lo on to theirshoes and fome of them threw in their Shirts, and then ran about naked, like Madmen Which was no joyful Sight to the thinking and concern'd Part of the Protel'tants who beheld it and it brought fuch a Concern Upon my Mind that I could not go near them.
