Countless ages ago their peaks first appeared, forced upward from the bottom of the sea by the action of heat in the earth. From openings in these peaks water, gases, steam, hot ashes, and melted rock or lava were thrown up into the air. The ashes floated in the air, gradually falling over the land. The lava flowed down the sides of the peaks. More lava and other material were added as the years passed by. In this way, and through disintegration, the peaks became mountains and plains.
