We had to cross the river, without doubt, Which General Sedgwick soon found out. He had the pontoons hauled to the river bank, And soon they were filled with many a Yank. General Brooks soon gave the word to start, The engineers pulled the boats very smart; To the middle of the river we had got, Without the rebels firing a shot.
